Derby della Madonnina or Milan derby is a football match between Inter
and Milan, one of the best clubs in Italy. It is called "Derby della
Madonnina" in honour of one of the main sights in the city of Milan, the
statue of the Virgin Mary on the top of the Duomo,
which is often referred to as the "Madonnina" ("Little
Madonna" in Italian).
Match always take place on same stadium, San Siro or Giuseppe Meazza.
First league match was played in 1909 and it was won by
Milan. Combined they were 36 times champions of Italy (18 each). In Europe
Milan is much successful wining 7 Champions League titles and two UEFA Cup
Winner's Cup compared to Inter's 3 Champions League and 3 UEFA Cup.
They were both successful during 60s. Inter won 2 CL, 2
Intercontinental cup and 3 Serie A. Milan won 5 trophies including two CL,
Intercontinental cup... Milan was much successful in late 80s and 90s or
Berlusconi era. They had many wins in Italy but also in Europe.
One of the most notorious derby matches was the second leg of the
Champions League quarter-final on 12 April 2005. With
Milan leading 1–0 thanks to an early Andriy Shevchenko goal and a 3–0 clear scoreline on aggregate,
referee Markus Merk controversially disallowed a
goal from Inter player Esteban Cambiasso. Inter's hardcore supporters became infuriated and various
debris were subsequently thrown onto the pitch, but soon escalated to lit flares,
one of which struck Milan goalkeeper Dida.
Merk halted the match at the 74th minute. After a 30-minute delay in which
firefighters were called in to remove the burning flares from the pitch, the
match was restarted. Dida, however, was unable to continue and was substituted
by Christian Abiatti. Less than a minute later,
however, Merk finally abandoned the match after more flares and debris rained
down. The match was awarded as a 3–0 victory, totaling a 5–0 aggregate, to
Milan. Inter were subsequently fined €200,000, the largest fine ever handed
down by UEFA,
and were ordered to play their first four Champions League matches behind
closed doors in the next season as punishment.
Last domination was by Inter from 2005 to 2010 when they
won 5 Scudetti and a Champions League. No much success for both in recent time.
Head-to-head is almost the same 77 Inter wins and 75
Milan wins. Goal difference 292:290 in favor of Inter (till 20 novembre 2016). Most
