BEST RESULT: Best result for Poland is third place. They achieved it twice: 1974 and 1982. Here is their squad from the 1982 WC held in Spain. Their opener was against future winners Italy. It was a goalless draw, the same as in the second match against Cameroon. Poland won the first group place with a big win versus Peru (5-1) in the last match. Second group stage matches were against Belgium and the Soviet Union. An easy 3-0 win vs Belgium and, again, goalless draw vs Soviets were enough for first place and a progression to the semi-finals. It was Italy again but this time Rossi scored two goals and Poland played a match for third place. France, the other semi-final loser, took an early lead. Poland scored two till half-time. Third one came in the first minute of the second half. France's second goal wasn't enough. Poland won third place.
