In a strong group with host Sweden, England and France they took second place. Draw against England, lose from Sweden and win against France were enough. In the semi-final phase Denmark faced title defenders Netherlands. In a great match with four goals, penalty kicks were decisive. Legendary van Basten was the only player who missed. The other semi-final winner was Germany. Denmark won the match with goals from John Jensen and Kim Vilfort.
